The Thing That You Want

Everyone wants something. The thing might be a material possession, a job, a vacation, a relationship, a compliment, an experience, anything. Some things are good and some not so much.  Some things you may want so bad you can taste it or feel it.

No matter the thing, it’s important to keep it properly prioritized. The things we want drive where we spend our time, thoughts, money, energy, and emotional investment. If not careful, a thing can affect your identity to the point that your sense of worth is rooted in having or not having the thing. This treads in dangerous waters.

Anything that takes the place of Jesus as your heart’s chief desire is idol worship. It is critical to keep Him at the forefront of your wants and desires. When He is, the ebbs and flows of life won’t shake you from His faithfulness and constancy. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” –Hebrews 13:8

It is only in Him that you can find ultimate fulfillment. So whatever other things you want, make sure He’s the main thing.

Roller Coasters and Faith

“For we live by faith, not by sight.” -2 Corinthians 5:7

“Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectation.” –Andrew Murray

There’s a great parallel between riding a roller coaster and faith. To get on a roller coaster, you have to have faith that the engineer, builders, and operator are skilled and able to get you safely through the ride. A certain level of trust can be developed by watching others have fun and safely ride it but until you actually get on the roller coaster, you haven’t demonstrated that you trust the architect.

Faith is like that too. You can read about it, listen to others’ experience with it, and sit through sermons about it but until you put it into practice, it’s just secondhand knowledge. Like a roller coaster, situations in life have unexpected drops, turns, and loops. When you place faith in the One who designed the world and is the ultimate architect, it doesn’t mean there won’t be surprises but He's in control and you can rest in that.

Don’t be afraid of asking God for things in faith. Just like the excitement of a roller coaster, excitement is waiting for those who live by faith. Be bold and courageous. If you’ve been clinging to safe harbors, test the waters and see what great adventures God has in store for those who live by faith.

Righteousness is a Direction Not a Line

 “For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; the upright will behold His face.” –Psalm11:7

Is righteousness something you ever think about? It can be a bit of a nebulous concept where we think “Yeah, that’s something good. People should be righteous.” But what does it actually mean on a daily basis?

Sometimes right and wrong is cut and dried and the way of righteousness is abundantly clear. Other times, difficult decisions arise and the waters are murky.

It can be easy to slide towards a line of right and wrong and justify whether you’re on the right side of the line. This misses the point though. Righteousness is a direction and not a line. When we’re moving in the direction of righteousness, there’s less question about what we can and can’t justify, what we should or shouldn’t do.

It’s good to think through complex moral questions ahead of time but a guiding principle should be, “does it move me closer to God or further away?” The answer to that question will point you in the direction of righteousness.

The Bible talks about righteousness over and over and how God loves it. Righteousness is just a part of close communion with God. It means we’re in lock step with Him and seeking after His ways and goodness.

The more frequently we move in the direction of righteousness in the little things, the easier it is to discern right and wrong in the big stuff. Similar to how you might become skilled through practicing a golf swing, free throw shot, or dance move, practice will exercise the muscles of righteousness. Jesus is a great workout buddy for this type of thing and will pump you up!

Don’t let what others are doing, convenience, or what’s easiest drive your decision making. Even if it means taking a harder road, the path of righteousness leads to the riches of intimacy with God.

Lean Not On Your Own Understanding

Path

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” –Proverbs 3:5-6

Leaning on our own understanding tends to be the default option for most people. It doesn’t come natural to trust in the Lord with all of your heart. Sure, there might be certain areas that we trust Him with but with all areas, at all times? That’s a much different standard.

Using experience, logic, training, and the advice of other people are all well and good but it’s vital that we are keyed in with God. He will reveal things to us that are unknowable outside of His guidance. I’ve seen this time after time in my own life. He’ll prompt me about something that may not make sense in the moment but later becomes abundantly clear.

When I rely on my own understanding I tend to get off the path, experience rough sailing, and take detours in life. When I fully trust in Him, He guides me and even though the journey can seem confusing and/or circuitous, He inevitably takes me to places and through experiences that would otherwise be impossible.

Acknowledging Him doesn’t mean making plans and then saying, “Hey God, how ‘bout a little blessing on this here plan that I’ve made.” It means, at the outset, placing your life before Him and saying, “All I am is Yours. Guide me in the path that You would have me follow.” Only then can you be certain that you’ll end up in the place, with the people, and in the manner He would have you go.

Commit Your Work to the Lord

“Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established.” -Proverbs 16:3

When you go to work each day do you start out with prayer to dedicate the day and your work to God? It makes a big difference when you’re operating from a framework of prayer as a starting point. Sure the job/task may be mundane or not even seem to be remotely related to spiritual matters but it’s important to bring God into even the ordinary parts of your work.

I think that God uses work to develop our character and who we are as people, not only as a way to make a living. That challenging task or difficult person at your workplace presents a great opportunity to turn the situation over to God in prayer and allow Him to step in to give you wisdom and strength.

It goes beyond just the professional workplace to include things like ministry, volunteer activities, hobbies, family, friends, relationships, anything that you spend time doing. Pray about them and commit each activity you’re involved in to the Lord. He will often reveal things to you and give you insight that you’d never have outside of seeking Him about it.

Is it possible to do good work without first committing it to God? Sure it is. But I’d much rather my foundation be grounded in Him and established by Him than strictly through my own efforts. It’s kind of like checking in with the architect before starting construction as well as throughout the project. He can point out trouble spots and better ways of doing things that you might not realize otherwise.

By Faith Not By Sight

To say that Scott Macintyre is extraordinary is to say that grass is green or water is wet. He just is. As the book develops, his heart shows through and not at all in an arrogant or conceited way. Some people are simply gifted and live incredible lives. His heart is that of a man who desires to inspire people through music and give glory to God.

I had not heard of Scott prior to reading the book and have watched American Idol maybe once. But as a musician and songwriter myself, I closely identified with many of the experiences he described in the songwriting process and performance preparations.

Scott graduated college at the age of 19 and subsequently was a Marshall scholar during which time he obtained a masters degree at the Royal College of Music in London. A year after returning to the US, he and his family went on tour as a singing group. After becoming interested in American Idol on television, he eventually decided to audition. Over the course of the next few months, he went through audition after audition and advanced through round after round, eventually making it to the top 13 before being eliminated in the round of 8.

Simply on the merits of his accomplishments in music and academics, he would already be considered to have lived a remarkable life. But add to this the fact that he’s legally blind with only 2 percent tunnel vision, and the accomplishments take on a whole new dimension. Not only is he blind but while getting his masters degree, he was in end stage kidney failure and had to go through about a year of dialysis followed by a kidney transplant once returning to the US.

Scott is additionally deeply committed to His walk with God, which is apparent all throughout the book. In numerous medical challenges, musical performances, and other events he is constantly lifting up the scenario in prayer and seeking God’s will. His close ties with his family are apparent and the love they have for each other is a model for family life. It is clear that Scott believes both in working and praying very hard in all aspects of his life. Because of his faith, musical gifts, and personality, I think if we ever had the opportunity to interact that we would probably become good friends.

Scott’s story is inspirational to say the least and proves that a person can do so much even with a handicap. He doesn’t use his blindness as an excuse for not doing something but rather works that much harder to overcome challenges and truly lives a full life.

If you’ve already seen him on television or heard his music, the book provides excellent color into who he is and the back story behind his life. For those who’ve not heard of him, he provides great insight into the world of a blind person, what it’s like to live with kidney disease and get a transplant, not to mention the life of a professional pop musician. His faith and trust in God will encourage you to seek God in your life as well. I highly recommend the book.

Inquire of the Lord

David consistently inquired of the Lord in numerous scenarios throughout his life. (I Samuel 23:2,4, I Samuel 30:8, 2 Samuel 2:1, 2 Samuel 5:23, I Chronicles 14:10) He knew the importance of staying in direct communication with God and highly valued His input.

In my own life I’ve had experiences where I distinctly sensed that God was leading me to do something or not do something. When I follow the leading, things turn out well but when I don’t, they inevitably go poorly.

Rather than making plans and asking God to bless them, it’s much more effective to inquire of Him ahead of time. Not that having goals and plans are bad but including God as the driver of the process from the start is crucially important.

Inquiring of God is good in both the big and small decisions. Getting in the habit of conversing with Him throughout the day and not just at set times is a great way of seeking His guidance and counsel. It’s just like you might talk with a friend about whatever subject while hanging out.

It’s helpful to remove external distractions when inquiring of Him and get your heart focused. This isn’t always possible in the heat of battle but intentional conversation in the peace and quiet helps facilitate staying in tune with Him when the battle gets thick. If there’s sin in your life, confess it so that you can interact with Him openly and unhindered.

Worship is another great way of preparing your heart to talk with God. Bring offerings of praise to the throne of God and just spend time in His presence. There is joy in His presence. It is there that you can truly commune with Him and seek wisdom.

I Shall Not Want

The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. -Psalm 23:1

The Shepherd's Psalm is such a frequently quoted passage that the meaning can be glossed over by the familiarity. It's good to go back to passages like this from time to time and really meditate on them and not just read them for the comfortable feeling.

The first verse in Psalm 23 speaks volumes in simple imagery. A large amount of our concerns and difficulties lie in the lack of trust or seeking Him as we make plans and goals and strive after them. The Shepherd knows everything going on in our lives and has good plans laid out for us if we will simply abide in Him.

Goals and hard work are good but they're best grounded in sinking this truth into our hearts. We can obtain anything imaginable but will ultimately remain unfulfilled and still seeking if we do not rest in Him and His provision. Only in Him will we be truly satisfied.

Take some time right now to pray about the dreams, desires, and wants in your life. Make sure your focus is on Him and rest in His promises.

God's Phone Number

Ever find yourself over analyzing and obsessing over a decision, how you’re going to do something, or get through a challenge in life? Yeah, don’t do that.

See there’s this whole concept called prayer where you don’t have to worry and instead can get guidance and wisdom from God. You know, the guy that made the world, keeps things in motion, and loves you unconditionally?

He wants to be directly involved in our decisions. He actually tells us in the Bible “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.“ –James 1:5 “…call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” -Jeremiah 29:12-13.

These verses are like God’s phone number and he’s inviting you to call Him up. It’s kind of like a lifeline on a game show but on a spiritual level and the best thing is that it never runs out. It’s a 24/7 direct line to God.

Be sure to keep up the communication on a regular basis, not just in emergencies. Like you might fire off text messages to a friend during the day, talk with God throughout the day whether in short prayers or longer conversations. It is in Him that we find wisdom and peace for the anxieties and complexities of life.

What Are You Building?

“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—each for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.” –I Corinthians 3:11-15

There are many, many activities, causes, things, and stuff that people commit their time, money, talents, efforts, and lives to. Some of them are very worthy and lasting, others are in the trivial and meaningless category.

This passage from I Corinthians should give pause as to how we invest ourselves and spend our time. Will what we’re building stand for something beyond the here and now or be burned away into nothingness?

It is only in the firm foundation of Jesus that anything of eternal significance can be built. All else will be washed away like a sand castle at the beach.

So what really matters and how do you determine that? On a practical level, invest in people and encourage them to seek after Christ. Use your abilities for organizations and causes that enable you to promote Jesus and bring glory to God. This can be any organization whether sacred or secular, in the church, business world, entertainment industry, agriculture, education, anything. In every venue you interact in, do things with excellence. In doing so, you will have opportunities to bring glory to God and direct people to Him.

When the end of finite time comes, there will be a reckoning. What are you building that will be left standing?

Unplug

Have you ever had the lights go out in the middle of something? Maybe it’s at work, hanging out somewhere, or just at home. This happened to me recently and while I wasn’t in the middle of anything critical it did alter my planned activities for the evening.

It got me to thinking about what a plugged in world that we live in. We sometimes forget to slow down, unplug and have time to think and just be quiet without all the external stimulation. Things like computers, cell phones, televisions, radios, and a host of other electronic items can serve us well but we can also become slaves to them if we’re not careful.

Quiet, uninterrupted time by ourselves can be rare. It’s important to carve out space in our schedules to decompress and reflect. In doing this, it enables us to think more clearly and be more effective in other parts of our lives.

There is a place for the quick prayer on the go or in the midst of crisis but there is also great value in spending time with God on a more intentional basis. He will provide wisdom and direction and help you to process what’s going on in life.

In Psalm 46:10, some versions of the Bible say: “Be still and know that I am God…” The New American Standard version says: “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” I like both versions but think that “cease striving” really captures the constant stimulation that so many people have going on in their lives.

By unplugging and stopping all the activity, we can encounter God in a way that would otherwise be difficult. If you don’t do so already, I encourage you to set aside some time this week to specifically focus on talking with God, praising, and listening to Him. It might not seem natural at first but stick with it and you may engage with Him like you never have before.

Finding Joy in Work

There are too many people in the world that dislike, hate, or feel trapped by their job. With most of us working at least 80,000 hours throughout our working lifetimes, it only makes sense to do something that we actually enjoy and are good at.

You are unique in your talents, interests, and experiences from anyone else in the world. This equips you to do things that no one else can do. No one.

Maybe it’s being an amazing leader, or a terrific mom to your kids, or the best teacher your students ever had, or a construction worker that is an outstanding craftsman, or a bus driver that always gets people where they need to go on time with a smile, or a nurse that brings healing and comfort to people. God has created you and made plans designed specifically for you.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”-Ephesians 2:10

Don’t ever settle for something that doesn’t bring you alive and light your fire. If you’re not there yet, start moving in that direction. The world’s got enough darkness. It needs you shining brightly.

There is great joy in that sweet spot of God’s blessing, your talents, and the things you love. You wake up energized, your creativity is stimulated, and you accomplish great things during the day.

Let us seek, therefore, the intersection of our passions, unique giftings, and God’s calling in our lives for it is there that we’ll find unparalleled joy and effectiveness in our work.

Turn Around

Two songs that I like that capture the idea of someone who’s stepped out of close communion with God are Turn Around by Matt Maher and When My Heart Runs Dry by Matt Redman.

It can be as simple as just getting a busy schedule or as bad as deliberate sin that takes you out of communion with God.

Maher says: “You don't have to take the broken road
You can turn around and come back home…
If you're scared that you don't matter
If you're lost and need to be found
If you're looking for a Savior
All you gotta do is turn around”

Redman’s lyrics say:
“When my heart runs dry
And there's no song to sing
No holy melody
No words of love within
I recall the height from which
This fragile heart has slipped...

And I'll remember You
I will turn back and do
The things I used to do
for the love of You”

If you find yourself stuck in sin or have just lost focus on God, turn around, reach out to Him, and draw near again. Don’t get down on yourself, rather pick things up from where you’re at and move forward in relationship with Him.

Fill your world with the things that keep your thoughts on Him. Memorize scripture, listen to and sing worship songs, read the Bible, and pray lots. The past can’t be changed but the good news is that it doesn’t have to be repeated in the future.

Unbroken

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

If not for so much documented historical research, the events of Louis Zamperini's life would seem unbelievable. After a life of mischief as a boy turned Olympic runner, he proceeds to join the military during WWII and becomes a bombardier involved in a number of bombing raids. While on a rescue mission, his plane crashes and he survives for weeks on a life raft. He and 2 other members of the plane's crew floated on the raft with scant provisions, dehydration, sharks and enemy fire to deal with. They are finally picked up by a Japanese ship and subsequently placed in a POW camp.

While imprisoned, they undergo torture incorporating hunger, sickness, dehydration, and both psychological and physical abuse, much at the hands of a man called The Bird. The Bird took special pleasure in tormenting Zamperini and made his life horrific while a prisoner. Incredibly, as the date for their mass execution approaches, the war comes to an end and they are released.

When Zamperini returns to the U.S., he is hailed as a hero come back from the dead and gets married shortly afterward. He then proceeds to flounder from one job to the next and sinks into alcoholism as he deals with the horrors of war. With his marriage on the rocks, a seemingly random interaction with a neighbor, introduces them to the evangelist Billy Graham who was holding meetings in Los Angeles at that time.

After his wife attends without him, he grudgingly joins her at a later date. He is unable to shake the pull of God on his life and becomes a Christian. Through this experience he finds peace and is subsequently able to forgive his captors and move on with life, becoming a Christian speaker and eventually starting a camp for troubled youth.

Hillenbrand did a remarkably thorough job of researching Zamperini's life and the surrounding events in great detail. The book reads like a novel rather than dry non-fiction. I highly recommend the book as an outstanding account of an incredible life.

New Year Exhortation

May you know God more than you've ever known Him in the coming year and structure your life in such a way that facilitates a vibrant, growing relationship with Him. May you not just talk about Him but actually talk with Him and know Him on an intimate level. May you worship Him with abandon, without concern for what others think, and with no reservations.

Let nothing stand in the way of your pursuit of Him. Throw off hindrances and run with perseverance, setting your eyes on Him and seeking Him above all else. Pay no mind to the siren call of popular culture or those who would have you place other things first. It is only in Him that you will find a heart fulfilled, satisfaction, and lasting joy.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." -Matthew 6:33

Do You Pray About Work?

Most people have at least some natural ability in their profession. As a result, there can be a tendency to rely solely on their talent, intellect, creativity, and hard work. While all of these are important elements to a successful professional life, a major piece is missing if prayer is left out.

God can give you insight into work scenarios that you would never have thought of on your own. He can open doors and opportunities where it would otherwise be impossible. He can give you the right words to use in tense meetings and clarity in challenging situations. As Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established."

On a spiritual level, He can help you to bring hope and light to a dark world. Fellow co-workers, vendors, and customers may each be very good in their respective fields but at the same time have a God shaped hole in their life. Pray for them and do your work with excellence so that they will respect you professionally. This may lead to opportunities to have deeper conversations about faith or to encourage them in seeking God.

Prayer should be an important part of your entire life and especially in your work, school, and/or ministry. When you go to work this week, pray at the beginning of the workday, as you attend meetings, write emails, make phone calls, and work on projects. Praying about your work creates a God-sized multiplier that would otherwise be impossible.

Your Story

A new chapter in the story of your life starts each day. Fill it with excitement as you tackle challenges and overcome obstacles. Let each chapter be filled with lessons and insight as you learn and grow. Give your all, not settling for good enough but seeking the best.

Run races, play games, sing songs, dance freely and unashamedly. Visit new places, meet new friends, take pictures, and send postcards. Pet kittens, ride bikes, smell flowers, and eat amazing food. Read books, write poems, speak passionately, talk to God, and listen to wise people.

The idea for this song came to me while out running this fall and seeing pine straw on the ground. I couldn't get the driving beat out of my head and this was the result. A lot of songs that I write cover deeper subject matter but this one was just for fun and to celebrate southern culture.

Sit Down and Chat With God

Ever find yourself cruising through life with little more than an occasional nod or quick shout out in God’s general direction? If that happens, sit down as quickly as possible and re-engage with Him on a deeper level.

It can be as simple as chatting with Him for a few minutes about how the day’s going. It can be as involved as intensive Bible study, spending time in intentional worship, or refocusing your heart through intercessory prayer. The key is to take some time aside and connect with him.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” -Psalm 46:10

It is only in close communion with Him that we benefit from His wisdom and insight for our lives. Frequent interaction brings familiarity, a deeper relationship, and the ability to recognize His voice amidst chaos and confusion. Anchor yourself through time with Him, seeking Him diligently and passionately in prayer.

The Deception of Perfection

Most people experience it to some degree. You know, that sense of not being good enough and that someone else is smarter, prettier, more organized, walking closer with God, more athletic, more talented, more whatever. The thought is that because we don’t have it all together, all the time, we are somehow inadequate.

No matter how disciplined you are, how gifted, or how hard you try, you will never be perfect. By all means, you should strive for excellence and improvement and seek God in all you do. But there’s a line beyond which is the great deception— the lie that perfection is required. We will never live up to our own and others’ real or imagined level of expectations. Perfection is unattainable. As the Bible says, “There is no one righteous, not even one.” –Romans 3:10

Quit beating yourself up when you mess up or don’t quite perform to the level you’d like. When the enemy whispers or screams lies to you about inadequacy or failures, ignore him and hold on to the promises of the Bible. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” –Romans 5:8

Because of Jesus, God loves you unconditionally. You don’t have to accomplish one more thing, make one more sale, get a promotion, run faster, lift more, perform better, read one more book, earn X amount of money, drive a fancy car, live in a nice neighborhood, or be friends with Mr. and Mrs. So-and-So before you’re good enough. All you need is to step into a relationship with Him through redemption in Christ and receive His love.

Next time you’re tempted to get down on yourself, don’t give in to the deception of perfection. We’re all broken in one way or another. The good news is that God uses broken people in a broken world.

Backseat Faith

Have you ever had those times when you sort of, kind of are doing the whole walk with God thing? Yeah, you might listen to the Christian radio station in the car and even make it to church most of the time but as far as an active and thriving relationship with Him, it’s mostly not happening.

It can be so easy to slip into this pattern with countless social events, work obligations, family commitments, sports, extra curricular activities, etc. vying for our attention. If we’re not careful, these activities can creep in and relegate faith to a backseat role with limited day-to-day involvement.

Not only does keeping faith on the sideline open the door for temptation and sin to steal in but it also robs us of the abundant life offered in Christ. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” -John 10:10.

For faith to thrive, it must be fed and exercised. When this happens, it will produce fruit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” –Galatians 5:22-23.

Invite Jesus into your day no matter how packed or busy. Read the Bible. Sing and listen to worship songs that focus your heart and mind on Him. Talk to Him as you would a friend. Thank Him for blessings in your life, ask Him for wisdom, intercede for the needs of yourself and others and believe that He will answer.

Let us seek more than just a casual faith in God but rather one that is active, thriving, and an integral part of our lives.

Have you noticed faith taking a backseat role in your life recently?

The Land Between

Life sometimes brings us tough stuff and we find ourselves somewhere other than where we'd like to be. In The Land Between, Jeff Manion walks through various real life scenarios of people experiencing hardship and their responses to seeking God in the midst of it.

Manion also examines the Israelites during their time in the desert and how God took them through various experiences in order to prepare them for entering the promised land. Many times, they missed the opportunity to grow in their faith and deepening of their relationship with Him.

In speaking about difficulties, Manion says, "God intends to grow something beautiful and deep and lasting, but we must cooperate with Him for the season of hardship to work its intended transformation. Don't let your detour go waste. You are in training, and God is up to something good."

I read the book during a season of introspection and found it to be very good in helping with self examination and figuring out the relationship between my walk with God and difficult situations.

The book is not hard to read but I recommend reading it slowly to allow for sufficient reflection. It is not a do-these-5-steps-and-you'll-be-through-with-your-hardship-in-30-days type of book. But if you are open to examining circumstances and what God may be teaching you, it is an excellent guide.

Merit Badges Won't Get You Into Heaven

Achievement and accomplishment are encouraged and well engrained into the fiber of our culture. We celebrate those who run marathons, graduate from college, win awards, serve at the homeless shelter, receive promotions, rescue orphans, break records, write books, become wealthy, and a host of other accolades.

These are commendable and all fine and well but they will never truly fulfill us or get us into Heaven. Our achievements will always fall short of the holiness and righteousness of God. It is only by His grace that we can be saved from sin. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." -Ephesians 2:8-10 The inclination towards achievement and accomplishment can be harnessed and focused on good works that God has prepared for you.

Seek to bear fruit but rest in His grace and belief in Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9) rather than a false righteousness built on merit badges.

Sweet Potatoes and Sin

Ever left something like a sweet potato untended for far too long? If not, check out the picture to the left to see what happens to a tater in a dark place. Roots begin to develop and grow.

If you think about it, sin can be similar. Left untended in a dark place, sin will take root growing steadily until it is so entrenched that it takes significant focus and prayer to be rid of.

As James says: "...each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." -James 1:14-15.

At the first sign of temptation, nip it in the bud. Rip out anything that's started to take root in your life and throw it away. Avoid seeding your mind and environment with things that make fertile soil for sin. Instead, fertilize ground that is rich in righteousness and ripe for the fruit of the Spirit.

Hungry for Righteousness

Have you ever been really hungry, so hungry that both animate and inanimate objects were at risk for consumption? This happens every once in a while for me and I could eat a box full of donuts but that would probably just make me hyper, give me a major sugar high, and result in a stomach ache while leaving me wanting for real nourishment. Usually, only things of substance like oatmeal, spaghetti, or a chicken sandwich can satisfy the hunger.

Over the past couple of months, I've been meditating a bit on Matthew 5:6, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."I've read or heard this verse many times but haven't spent much time pondering it before. The desire to fulfill emotional/spiritual hunger is natural and as with physical hunger, numerous options are available.

People may try to fill their spiritual/emotional hunger with things like TV, sports, alcohol, relationships, internet surfing, work, achievement, or an assortment of other things. These things may temporarily fill emptiness but will never provide true fulfillment.

I challenge you to spend the next 30 days asking God to put in you a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Feast from the table of spiritual meat and potatoes and be filled. Drink deeply and be satisfied from the springs of His righteousness.

Luck vs. Hard Work, Focus, and Prayer

It's not often that someone skates through life purely on luck. Opportunity comes to those who focus intently, work hard, and pray a lot. God sometimes supernaturally orchestrates things in our lives but I believe that He also expects to use the talents, skills, and abilities that He's given as effectively as possible. Effective use of God given gifts accomplishes far more than human effort can ever hope to attain.

Bezalel

"Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts." Exodus 31:1-5

Some people have the idea that a person must be a vocational minister in order to really serve God on some elevated level. This thought couldn't be further from the truth. While God does call some people to be vocational ministers, He also calls people to a vast array of other professions and equips them for those things.

Bezalel had the hand of God upon him and was given all kinds of knowledge, creativity, and craftsman oriented skills which could be used for His glory. God has similarly given each person unique abilities and empowered them to serve Him through those skills.

If you're a good teacher, do that as unto Him. If you're good at construction, do that as unto Him. If you're gifted with financial matters, serve Him in that arena. If you're artistically inclined, let Him guide your creative efforts.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

No matter what your job is, do it well and in a way that would glorify God. This can open doors to share with co-workers, clients, or vendors about spiritual matters. You may be the first person they've encountered who demonstrates Jesus in real life outside the walls of a church building. Many people give up on church or have just never had interest in going but would be open to listen to someone they respect in the professional world.

We are all vocational ministers. Some have the title of pastor while others have the title of accountant, nurse, salesman, police officer, waitress, or custodian. God has given you talents and abilities, use them to bring glory to Him.

Alabaster

This is a song I wrote based on the passage about the woman who anointed Jesus with an alabaster jar of perfume and cleaned his feet. See Luke 7:36-50 for the full story.

While it is written to speak to her scenario, the lyrics can apply to anyone's life in receiving forgiveness and then telling their story of freedom in Christ.

In All Your Ways Acknowledge Him

How many times have you compartmentalized faith as a part of your life? It can be so easy to have that 5, 10, or 15 minute quiet time in the morning or at night (check it off the list), go to church for a couple hours on the weekend, and then more or less not include God in the rest of your day/week.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." "All your ways" means all, Not just some but all. On a practical level, that means staying in a constant mindset of conversation with God. As you're driving to work, before that conference call, when you're making a difficult decision, while you're standing in line at the grocery store, as you're talking with people. At all times.

When we get in this habit of praying continually -I Thessalonians 5:17, we can really involve God in all aspects of our life and not act as if he's just a minor player in it. He becomes intricately woven throughout our lives and we more clearly hear from Him as He guides our steps.

A really short but good book on this topic is The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence.

Lasting Joy

False hope and cheap imitations of joy promoted by the world are revealed as shallow when juxtaposed with life in Christ. Lasting joy and satisfaction will only be found in fixing our eyes on Jesus and running the race of life in His power.

JUMP: Life Transformation

Over the past 9 months or so, I've been helping a friend at church to write and edit a book. As of this week, it's hot off the presses. Yay!

The title of the book is JUMP: Life Transformation (JUMP stands for Jesus Understands My Problems) and the concept is about replacing hurts, problems, and unhealthy coping mechanisms with a core centered on Christ. While it does address addictions and other hurtful behaviors, the book is much broader than that and speaks to anything which occupies the place of Jesus in a person's life.

The book summary is:
Do you have a problem that's holding you back from a life of freedom and joy? Do you turn to unhealthy habits, behaviors, or choices when you find yourself overwhelmed by life circumstances? Maybe you know someone who has a problem and wish you knew how to help.

JUMP is about replacing hurts, problems, and unhealthy coping mechanisms with God-enabled life transformation. Are you ready?

Jump In!

It's been a fun process to take a concept and develop it into a finished product. I definitely have a much greater appreciation for what goes into writing a good book. Even though I was very involved in creating the book, objectively, I think the book has some great material which will help lots of people.

We may eventually get it up on Amazon or other online sites but for the time being, it is available online at JumpRecovery.org as well as the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church bookstore in Liberty, Missouri. If you get a chance to read it, I highly recommend it. :)

Dangerous

Do you want to be dangerously effective as a disciple of Christ?

Danger implies an element of risk or lack of safety. As it applies to your walk with God, seek to be a warrior for Him that is dangerous and that the enemy fears. Not that you might have a sense of power but that God would be glorified and His kingdom strengthened.

Warfare is not easy and is wrought with danger. Acknowledge warfare in the spiritual realm but don't shrink to a life of easy comfort. Instead, seek an active and joyful existence spent serving and worshiping God, walking closely with Him, and knowing that he will provide power in battle.

We will not be perfect and will mess up from time to time but this should not prevent us from being used for God's purposes. He is fully capable of using imperfect people to accomplish His will.

As His disciple, seek to learn and grow in your relationship with Him. Share with others and invest in their lives so that they too can know Him.

This kind of life will be dangerously effective.
